The Problem ChildRose seems to be settling in well, but now that she is confident, she has started challenging Scarlett for dominence. So far it is just little stuff, like wanting to be the first through the door and "puppy bowling" if they both are running for something in the yard. Oddly enough, it isn't a problem in the house, just the yard. Since Scarlett is a natural leader, full of confidence and spunk, I would rather she be the alpha when she grows up a bit. Rose has been barking at strangers, dog and human, and is not at all confident. Scarlett will run up and greet everyone, which is a much better tone to set. So far, we are continuing to treat Scarlett as the leader and Rose is going to have to deal with it as Scarlett grows into the role. For her own part, Scarlett seems to regard it as perfectly natural that a 20 lb. puppy is the boss of a 33 lb. adult dog. Scarlett has also been going to Canine Good Citizen class. She's been doing okay, but it is really hot and she loses interest in treats. The instructors also told me to trust her to do the right thing, because I am unconsciously holding her lead a little too tightly. But we are both learning fast and I am pleased with her progress. Last night they suggested learning a trick to demonstrate, as a fun way to build the relationship. Scarlett wouldn't do the "Bang, bang" dramatic death on the dirty floor, but she did a lovely "shake paw" instead. I said "shake" and held out my hand and she placed her paw in it slowly, like Audrey Hepburn after being coached by Henry Higgens! I praised her and she gave me a sweet little kiss in return, her paw still in my hand. Very charming! She has had some sores on her feet and legs though. I can't figure out if Rose has been tumbling her too hard or if it is biting insects. It looks terrible, but she doesn't seem to complain. I would love to get some ideas for helping her out, so if anyone knows . . . And I found some old pictures on my camera when I was taking some pictures the other day. I found some from the day we picked up Rose and some puppy pictures, so those will be some Easter Eggs in the photo archives. :)
